Korea in 7–10 Days: The Seoul + Busan Itinerary

Give Seoul four to five days and Busan two to three, and ride the KTX between them. 1,514 threads name both cities, we have the answers on file for 646 of them, and 33 of those 646 carry an answer putting a number of days or nights on both: Seoul at four or five in 19 of the 33, Busan at two or three in 25, which splits the 33 into 15 inside both bands, 14 inside one and 4 outside both. Seven days is the low end of each, at four hotel nights in Seoul and two in Busan. Ten days is the same two-base route with one more Seoul day, two more Busan nights for four in all, and Gyeongju as a day trip.

The last morning decides your final hotel night. Busan to Seoul is 2 hours 23 minutes, and Seoul Station out to the airport is 43 minutes more on the express AREX airport train, 51 to Terminal 2 (its slower all-stop service and the fares are in our airport guide, /guides/incheon-airport-to-seoul). That is three hours six minutes of moving, before the platform change at Seoul Station and the check-in queue. If your flight home leaves Incheon in the morning, sleep in Seoul the night before: at ten days the day-9 evening train buys you that night, at seven it costs you a Busan night. Korail's English site loads schedules dynamically and we couldn't read the departure list, so check the first morning trains there once your date opens.
The KTX between them
KTX is Korea's high-speed rail, and Seoul–Busan is its main line: 2 hours 23 minutes, Seoul Station to Busan Station, by Korail's own count. A one-way standard seat is 59,800 won, the fare as Klook lists it, because Korail's own page loads its fares dynamically. Klook resells Korail tickets and shows no booking fee on that page (no affiliate link here), and its US$42 is that same seat converted, so it moves with the exchange rate.
Treat 59,800 as an August 2026 number: the Korea Fair Trade Commission cleared Korail's merger with SR, which runs the competing SRT high-speed trains, in August 2026, it takes effect in September, and fares are being re-rated with it in a direction and by an amount the notices don't give. Seats usually go on sale one month before departure, at 07:00 Korean time. The hedge is VisitKorea's, on its official train page; neither it nor Korail lists the exceptions. Set the alarm in your own zone: 07:00 in Korea is 3 p.m. Pacific, 5 p.m. Central and 6 p.m. Eastern the day before, on daylight time. If your date isn't loaded at 07:00, check again through the day before reading it as sold out. A May 2026 thread puts a tighter number on it:

Four or five days is that traveler's habit, not the operator's limit.
Public holidays are the other thing to plan around. Chuseok, the fall harvest holiday, falls on September 24–26 in 2026, and October has National Foundation Day on the 3rd, a Saturday observed on Monday the 5th, and Hangeul Day on Friday the 9th, which gives the month two three-day weekends: the 3rd to the 5th and the 9th to the 11th. If one lands inside your trip, keep the KTX day off it, spend the long weekend inside one city, and book those hotel nights when you book the train. Seoul first, or Busan first?
Fly into Incheon and start in Seoul: Incheon International Airport (ICN) sits on the Seoul side of the country. Price an open-jaw ticket too, in through Incheon and home out of Busan's own Gimhae International Airport (PUS), which cuts the return train entirely. We couldn't confirm which long-haul carriers fly out of Gimhae, so search PUS on your own airline's route map first. If it only flies you home from Incheon, your last morning is a train morning: that train has you back in Seoul around midday, and if the flight leaves late enough to spare an hour or two, a Seoul Station locker takes the bags (our luggage guide, /guides/luggage-storage-korea).
What fills the days
Busan splits into a west day around the old center and an east-coast day; the Busan guide covers where to sleep and how they run.
Seoul is where four or five days go. These threads name Gyeongbokgung palace in 79 of the 1,514, the Namsan tower in 64, Bukchon Hanok Village in 49, Changdeokgung in 28, Gwangjang Market in 27 and Insadong in 24; 976 of the 1,514 name any place at all. Two day trips out of the city are named too, each a full day: the DMZ, the tour of the border zone, in 108 threads and Nami Island in 53. Our Seoul guide turns them into day plans.
A third stop? Gyeongju folds in. Jeju doesn't.
Of these 1,514 threads, 495 (33%) bring up Jeju and 421 (28%) bring up Gyeongju. Those counts say both come up often, not which one fits: we counted mentions, not verdicts. Hotel nights decide it.
Gyeongju, the old Silla capital, asks for a day and no hotel night, and hotel nights are what runs out at this length. The 4–3–1 plan above gives it one day, out in the morning and back to your Busan hotel at night; the Busan guide carries the terminal, the bus route and how long the ride takes. Cut it and day 8 is another Busan day, with nothing else moving.
Jeju, the island province off Korea's south coast, needs its own base, its own days and a flight. The two-week split quoted in these threads runs 6 Seoul, 4 Busan, 4 Jeju:

How many days do you need for Seoul and Busan?
Seven days fits both, with Busan at its two-night minimum: four Seoul days counting your arrival evening, a morning train on day five, two Busan nights, and a travel day home. Ten days adds a Seoul day, two more Busan nights and a Gyeongju day trip.
How do I get from Seoul to Busan?

How far in advance can I book the KTX?
One month, from 07:00 Korean time: 3 p.m. Pacific, 5 p.m. Central and 6 p.m. Eastern the day before, on daylight time. Is 10 days enough for Seoul, Busan, and Jeju?
Not comfortably. Jeju is a third base with its own flight: three hotels and two more half-days of travel. One poster in the Reddit threads we counted puts the classic three-stop split at 6 days Seoul, 4 Busan and 4 Jeju, on two weeks. On 10 days, the two cities plus a Gyeongju day trip is the calmer plan.
