Come for an evening, eat sitting down, and put your sightseeing somewhere else. Myeongdong is the shopping quarter in Jung-gu, central Seoul, at the foot of Namsan hill, and it turns up in 1,116 of the 13,125 traveler threads we labeled on r/koreatravel. What those threads ask is telling: 219 are working out whether to book a hotel here, against 79 asking what to eat. Whether to sleep here is the live argument, and the replies split both ways. So does the district's reputation: 47 of the 1,116 threads use the words "tourist trap." Every count on this page says how often something comes up; none of them rates anything. Keep the palaces and markets that share these threads for another day.

The alternative these threads name is Insadong, the craft-shop and teahouse street up in Jongno, the palace district. It is named alongside Myeongdong in 66 of the 1,116 threads — 11 of those inside the 219 about where to stay — and six threads put the choice in their title. Pick Myeongdong if short transfers and a shopping street at the door matter more to you than a quiet one; 53 of those 219 stay threads mention crowds.

Four places we cut out-count most of that table: Gyeongbokgung at 222, Bukchon Hanok Village at 170, Gwangjang Market at 114, COEX at 99. All four stand across town, past walking distance, and that is the only reason they are missing above. Insadong at 66, from the stay question above, out-counts most of those rows too; it sits up in Jongno, outside the walk this table keeps to. What to eat, and what the argument is about
The food threads disagree about the stalls. One reply, in a thread titled "Myeongdong is overrated af," splits it this way:

Both halves hold if you treat the stalls as a snack circuit and eat dinner sitting down. Visit Seoul describes them lining the main street, which you reach from Myeongdong Station Exits 5 to 10 on Line 4; they set up in the afternoon and run late into the evening, priced per skewer or cup. No operator publishes those prices, so we can't put a figure on the "aimed at visitors" half of the complaint. The night market is named in 19 of the 1,116 threads.
For dinner, Myeongdong Kyoja is the only restaurant inside the district that reaches the table above, named in 30 of the 1,116 threads. Visit Seoul puts it about 50m off the main street and names it for kalguksu — knife-cut noodles in broth. A bowl runs a little over 10,000 won; the restaurant publishes no menu page we could reach. That 30 measures how often it comes up; the only opinion we can attach to it is one diner's:

Shopping and money
Shopping is the third-biggest thread type here at 122, with 43 more on beauty and medical — skincare, hair salons, and the opticians travelers use for prescription glasses. Olive Young is named in 46 of the 1,116 threads and Daiso in 26; narrowed to the shopping and beauty threads alone, those drop to 13 and 9. Getting there and around
Two routes from Incheon Airport: AREX, the airport train, to Seoul Station and then a couple of stops on Line 4; or the 6001 airport bus, which stops at Myeongdong Station (명동역) and costs 17,000 won for an adult. Inside the district everything above is a walk; the tower is a climb up Namsan or a cable car ride. Namsan stands directly over Myeongdong: walk up through the park, or take the cable car from its boarding station on Sopa-ro, about 570m uphill from Myeongdong Station Exit 4, with a free shuttle running up from the station. The cable car runs 10:00 to 23:00 and costs 15,000 won return for an adult. The tower observatory is charged separately, at 29,000 won for adults and 23,000 for children, open until 22:30 on weekdays and 23:00 at weekends with last entry half an hour before. The plaza outside it is where these threads' skyline photos come from; no operator publishes its hours, so plan around the cable car's last run.
One sequencing note, since it cuts against the order of this page: the shops are a daytime errand, the stalls come after dark. Sightsee elsewhere in daylight, arrive late afternoon, and let the two overlap.
